Artist Statement
My artistic practice is rooted in self-reflection and exploration of memory expressed through both functional pottery and sculptural ceramic wall hangings. These two versions of the same medium provide distinct yet interconnected pathways to examine remembering as an open dialogue between our past and present selves. I further integrate past with present by interpolating patterns and motifs from my early childhood doodles into surface decoration using underglaze transfers and hand-cut paper stencils.
My functional pottery is created with the intent of providing purposefully made objects that foster a deeper appreciation for and meaningful curation of our immediate material world. These vessels, while based in utility, transcend functionality. They serve as quiet mementos for daily use and special remembrance that encourage more mindful connection with the chosen objects that decorate our every-day lives.
My sculptural wall hangings embrace abstraction and spontaneity. These works depict free-flowing visual movement and repetition that echo the ways in which we revisit and reprocess the past. The rhythmic nature of repeating forms mirrors the cyclical patterns of memory, replicating how certain moments and their accompanying emotions resurface and change over time. Repetitive making evolves into ritual, simultaneously churning up recollections and sparking revelations. Some pieces become not only physical manifestations of remembrance but cathartic untethering: letting go of attachment to a memory through intentional material transformation. Resulting forms intertwine commemoration of the past and the value of memory as lived experience with mindful consideration in and of the present.
